the home stretch

Did I sleep through the first 18 days of October? Because I think we accomplished more this weekend than we did in the first 3 weeks of the month combined.

This weekend we:

-Got our rental license! We are officially done dealing with the city (for now), have passed all inspections, and are ready (legally) to rent out our duplex!!!!

-Painted the basement walls, trim, stairs, railings, doors and pretty much every other nook and cranny in the basement. This took up the majority of the weekend, and it was worth it. The basement looks sooooo much better- cleaner and more inviting. Just a few finishing touches down there and we can cross that area off the list completely.

-Got David a nightstand/ dresser. Even though this officially happened on Thursday, David spent part of the weekend organizing his little 3-drawer dresser. He hasn't had a dresser since high school and is pretty excited to have more than a closet to store his stuff in. I spent a lot of time going back and forth on what I wanted for his side of the bed- a dresser, a traditional nightstand, shelves with baskets, a trunk, etc- so it feels really good to have this done.

-Moved the rest of our boxes upstairs. We didn't have a chance to unpack them, but all of our belongings are officially in our apartment, so the lower level is ready to be cleaned and shown (minus the tools we are still using down there of course).

-Worked the Vikings game. I would rather have been getting stuff done around the house, but I guess it was a nice, necessary break from housework. And a chance to make some $$$ so we can pay for all the stuff we are doing.

-Went lit dropping for a candidate for state rep, the only time we got to enjoy the nice weather this weekend.

-Found a company to do background/ credit checks on our potential renters.

-Did the obligatory trips to home depot to get paint, and then more paint when you didn't get enough the first time

-And this one here is probably the best... we finished our upstairs laundry room! That included painting the walls, ceiling, and trim, having Eric lay a few more tiles, finally moving the washer and dryer in their little cubby and out of the bathroom/ hallway and stacking them on top of each other! It also included a few hook-ups and some minor? electrical things, none of which were done by me. I did a few high kicks in the bathroom to celebrate, because there is enough room for a small dance party in there now.

-Toured the Surly Brewery with 2 friends, who had scored tickets for the hard-to-get tour. I almost left this out so you would feel bad for us and think we spent every second of our weekend slaving away, but we did manage to squeeze in some fun on Friday night. We had a great time and learned way too much about how to brew beer, and hops or something. Unfortunately for me, I don't like Surly beer, but that worked out well for David- who got to keep going back for more and more samples. After the tour we went downtown to a pizza place called Black Sheep. We demolished 3- coal fired pizzas, and then went next door to The Loop to meet up with a few more friends for drinks. And just so this post has a picture, here we are on the tour:

But now I will make you feel bad for us, because even though we accomplished so much this weekend we still have a long list of things to do either before we show the apartment, or before we rent it out. That includes, but is not limited to:

-put on all the outlet/ switch plates
-fix the living room fan
-finish the window treatments in the kitchen and basement
-caulk the kitchen counter
-screw on the mailboxes
-replace kickplate on front door
-scrape the paint off the windows
-paint the kitchen cupboards
-paint the kitchen ceiling
-patch cement wall
-replace numerous thresholds
-learn how boilers and radiators work
-finalize contract
-finalize application
-take all the debris we accumulated in our backyard to the city dump
-scrub every inch of the apartment until immaculate

So go on, feel bad, and then when the guilt is driving you crazy, come over and help us out, or at least drop off cookies.
