finally friday

I racked my brains all day and could only come up with three things, so three is all you get!

1. On the agenda for this weekend: vending 2 games, work fundraiser, birthday party, housewarming party, mini golfing/hayride/ pumpkin patch extravaganza, removing a beehive from the roof, and hopefully a little painting if the weather continues to cooperate and some gutter cleaning. Whew!

2. We hosted a chili cook-off and bonfire recently, and while our chili didn't win any prizes this year (last year it took second), I would still highly recommend this buffalo chicken chili if you are in the mood for something besides traditional red chili. Next time we make it though I think I will substitute shredded chicken.

3. This week flew by and I didn't get to mention one of the highlights from last week,  getting to spend the day with an old friend and roommate from college:

Happy Friday!

books, books, books

I'm at a loss of things to write about, even though the days are no less jam-packed than normal. So I thought I'd bounce back to that new year's resolution list and see how I'm doing. Remember my goal of reading 30 books this year?

Well, I am a probably a little behind schedule, but we are just entering good snuggle-up-and-read-a-book weather (preferably by a toasty fire with some hot chocolate), so it's the perfect time to hunker down and reach my goal.

Here's what I've read so far:

-Chronicles of Narnia, books 1-4 by CS Lewis
-Anne of Green Gables, books 3-6 by LM Montgomery
-The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
-Mind Prey  by John Sandford
-O Pioneer by Willa Cather
-The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards
-Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
-Pearl of China by Anchee Min
-Freakonomics by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner
-Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent
-Empress Orchid by Anchee Min
-The Last Empress by Anchee Min

I can safely say I've enjoyed all of the books. Clearly however, some more than others. Mind Prey was a quick read, perfect for a long weekend at the cabin. It's a murder- mystery that takes place in the Twin Cities. It was fun to visualize the characters running around streets and buildings I am quite familiar with. Unbroken was probably my favorite of the bunch so far, I would recommend it to anyone- seriously go check it out. Freakonomics I found a little disappointing, I had heard such good things about it from literally everyone who mentioned it, that I was expecting to be blown away, and I wasn't although some of the facts presented were interesting on their own. All of the books by Anchee Min- Pearl of China, Empress Orchid, and The Last Empress I have read in 1-2 days each (so I suppose I liked them a little). I had read a book by the same author in the past (maybe 8th or 9th grade??) and always remembered it, so on a whim I checked these out from the library and was not disappointed. I'm always a fan of good historical fiction, but I think the setting of these stories-in late Imperialistic and Communist China, something I know very little about- is what makes them so intriguing to me.

So it looks like I need at least 12 more by Dec 31st. I've got a few more in the queue but are there any recommendations out there?

just a little painting project

Hard at work around here, taking advantage of every dry day we get. We were able to borrow a paint sprayer as well as a sizable extension ladder and with these little luxuries we are just cruising through the painting process (while saving money!). We have one side completely done with 2 coats and the other side about 2/3 of the way done with 1 coat. Just gotta finish up that second side and paint some trim and we can call it a wrap for the fall! I can't wait to post some official before and after pictures.

You can tell one of next year's projects is going to be the grass in the front yard...

weaveroo

Winston decided to do the "old weaveroo" (name that movie) on the busy street outside our house last night during rush hour. In other words he decided to go play in the traffic and Franklin almost became an only child. We still can't figure out what possessed him, but here's the whole story:

We were just getting set up to work on painting a new side of the house with the sprayer. We had gotten all the accoutrement outside and I decided to bring the dogs out with us since they had already spent the day trapped inside. I put their leashes on, took them outside, and hooked them to me so they wouldn't be able to get too far away and cause a nuisance barking at the pedestrians and neighborhood dogs. A few minutes later someone strolls by the front of our house with a small dog. I bend over to pick up the pups- a preventative move, to stop them from freaking out if the walker decides to turn towards us. Naturally I go to pick up Franklin first as he is the troublemaker. At this point the dogs are relatively calm, just a few low growls in their throats. But while I am bending down Winston, apparently*, sees something in the opposite direction and starts to take off running. His collar snaps and he finds himself in an all-out sprint across the yard and the street towards a very busy corner.

I screamed for David (I can't move that fast with Franklin). David leaped off the ladder after Winston. Winston made it all the way across the street before he realized his mistake with all giant cars whizzing by him, or heard me yelling for him and knew he was in trouble. Then he turns around and goes back through the street and proceeds to lay down in the middle of the road (laying down is what he does around the house when he knows he has been naughty and I am scolding him). At this point David is in the road and he has stopped traffic (how the traffic came to a stop changes depending on who you ask- but I bet it looked a lot scarier from the middle of the street than from my viewpoint on the sidewalk). He snatches up Winston, still cowering, and brings him safely back to me.

We got very very lucky last night. We don't know why or how the collar snapped, but we certainly won't be taking them out anymore without their harnesses on. And they probably won't get to go out with such "low" supervision now (although in my defense at that moment I don't think I could have been watching them any closer).

I hugged Winston extra tight last night. We don't know what we'd do without our old man around the house keeping his younger bro in line.

*Looking back, we still don't know what he was running after. There were no dogs, people, bicycles, etc in that direction. It honestly appeared as if he decided to chase a red jeep down the road. And to interject a slightly lighter note, I haven't seen Winston run that fast in a long time. He seemed to enjoy his 7 seconds of freedom, before of course the reality of traffic surrounded him.
